the world as i see it

walk it out!!

i have never been the athletic-type.
...okay, so that's an understatement. but when i was young, i attempted to play little league basketball (after all, my dad was a girl's basketball coach!) but i realized the sport wasn't for me when i'd run AWAY from the basketball. i can remember looking up at the ball, about to get a rebound, and being scared it was going to smash my nose or drop on my toe. so i'd run. the other way.
however, the one semi-athletic thing that i did enjoy was dancing. from the time i could slip on my own ballet slippers until i was in high school, i took tap, jazz, and ballet. while in high school, i'd watch in envy when other schools had dance teams perform at halftime.
then, in college, i found my best, lifelong friend on a dance floor. we became friends through our nights at the bar -- we'd dance on top of the bar, not to be sexual, but to give ourselves more space to show our moves. there would always be groups of guys who'd break out a choreographed routine and i'd join right in, learning the moves as i'd go. when 'rosa parks' became popular, i tried to make up a dance routine to it. i imagined having my own dance team and teaching them moves, mixing them music, and watching them perform at halftime.

last year, i started that dance team. and even though my dance moves and taste in music are way outdated, last week, i sat on the gym floor, dead center, watching their halftime debut.
