Debate Topics

I realized today that my AP class is a great resource for topics to discuss on my blog. Today, for example, we discussed a play Equus, which focuses on a young boy who replaces horses as his god. One night, the boy blinds six horses with a spike (for a reason I won't reveal in case anyone wants to read it) and so the play is focused on his meetings with Dr. Dysart, a child psychiatrist.

Several excellent questions popped up throughout my class's discussion today. Things such as: does materialism stifle passion? is our world as worshipless as Dr. Dysart presumes? is it better to live a socially-acceptable, but passion free life, or a socially-unacceptable, and passion full life? what do you think of the field of psychiatry?

Obviously, these are questions based on themes and events from the book but they led to a discussion that was insightful, analytical, and in-depth.

Personally, I believe that passion is essential for a happy life. There is a solid difference between happiness and contentment. One could live a life of contentment, without passion or worship; however, to be truly happy, doesn't one have to have passions? Regardless if someone is passionate about their ambition, their loved ones, or their religion... passion is what drives people.
