my life.
Here's an interesting tidbit about me (and I say that like the people reading this blog don't already know this... as if anybody besides my brother, my boyfriend, and my best friend ever READ this... but anyway, let me indulge myself) - i am working towards becoming nationally certifed to teach. this is a rigorous, independent project that, if i achieve it, will earn me a $5000 raise and the ability to teach anywhere in the nation. (*cough* jesse)
even for those of you who knew i was doing this, you may not know what it is... so hear ya go....
basically, to be nationally certified as a high school english teacher, i have to prove that i meet 14 lengthy standards. i do that in several ways...
first, is a portfolio, made up of four entries. entry one is based on my ability to teach students to read and write (unfortunately, they don't make people pass this entry before having children - but anyway!). i have to choose two students and submit several examples of their work throughout the year, in addition a description and analysis of my lessons and their work. entry two is based on my ability to facilitate a whole class discussion. i had to videotape myself teaching (or leading) a group discussion. i have to submit 15-minutes of that lesson, as well as about 15 pgs of my description, analysis, and reflection of the lesson (I'll spare you the educational jargon, but basically I have to prove that I did all kinds of good-teacher stuff when directing this discussion). entry three is based on my ability to facilitate small groups. again, i have to submit a 15-minute videotape of a lesson and a 15 pg writeup. in entry four, i have to prove that i am a leader, a learner, and a partner with parents and community members. i have to describe 5-8 things that i've done thats falls into those three categories, then describe how they impacted my students' learning, then provide documentation of them all. every entry has a page limitation that is difficult to meet, and we have no examples to go by. my portfolio is due in march...
THEN, after all this is said and done, i have to take six tests to prove I know my stuff. i have to analyze poetry and literature, as well as read student work that needs improvement and say how i would teach the student in order to improve. my tests have to be taken by june...
THEN, i find out if i pass in november. if i do, you'll hear me whoop and holler (yes, emily, even you'll hear me in atlanta). if i don't, i have two more years to pass whatever is left. but we aren't going to focus on that!
